Happy Valentine's Day!!!

A day devoted to LOVE!!!  People who know me also know that I am such a softie.  I love Valentine's Day. My Dad will go out of his way today to pick up my favorite candy from Fannie May so I always have a Valentine!  He's a pretty awesome Dad and he set the bar pretty high for my future husband, because I know how a lady should be treated with provision and protection.

ILOVEMESOMELOVE!  Never take the people in your life for granted and reach out to someone today and tell them you love them and that they matter.  You never know how you can brighten up someone's life by shining a little light and love on them.

Wishing you and yours a very Happy Valentine's Day that's full of love, laughter, smiles and joy.  =)

Church...

I didn't grow up religious and I was not raised in the church but it's become an important part of my life in the past few years and I am thankful that I found a church home. The church that I attend is non-denominational and it's made up of a younger congregation and it welcomes and encourages you to just come as you are with no judgment or formalities. I think that is why I was initially drawn to return to the church after my first visit. The church I attend is called New Life Oakwood and the Pastor is John Hannah.

Every February, the Pastor does a series on Love in the spirit of the month. This Sunday he spoke on Friendship and it resonated with me on a deep level. Here are some of my notes from the sermon.

  • Sometimes your friends will say and even do stupid things but they are still your friends. So, we need to stop operating from the spirit of offense and operate from the spirit of love and forgiveness.
  • You need friends that when you cannot get to Jesus, they will take you to Jesus.
  • You need people in your life that will believe God for you.
  • Everyone else cannot be on probation for the hurt that someone else caused.
  • When you're going somewhere, be careful of who you allow around you. As you move forward, use the gift of discernment.
  • Sometimes you have to slay your own personal Goliath before people will begin to notice you.
  • A real friend is someone who loves you like they love themselves.
  • If we are connected in spirit, when you get blessed, I get blessed and when I get blessed, you get blessed.
  • With real friends, you should be able to drop your guards because there should be no judgment or worry that the person will share your business, pass judgment or use the information against you. Therefore, we should be able to be transparent with one another.
  • Friendship is a spiritual connection and not a natural connection.
  • Friends hold each other up in the best light. They should not speak badly about each other and if someone else has something negative to say, they should defend your honor. A friend can kill a rumor and stop a lie.
  • You need someone who will have your back at all times. Someone who will fight for you and not give up on you. Someone who will go into the spirit and pray for you and your situation.
  • A friend can and should check you when you're acting out of character and when you have strayed from  your path.
  • A real friend will be there for you even when you don't have anything.
  • A friend will celebrate you for who you shall become.
This is the one that hit home for me at the end of the sermon.
  • Sometimes you need a separation from friends but that is just for a season, a period of time. You might have been hurt by them and disappointed and rightfully so, you needed a break from them and a separation. But, true friendship is a covenant in the spirit and that is for eternity. Sometimes you have to call that friend back into your life and extend an olive branch to them to get things back on the right track and now is the time to do that without delay.
Pastor Hannah is a good shepherd and he has never led me down the wrong path.

Online Dating...

It's no secret that I've pretty much been on my own and virtually single since September...5 months. Family and friends have been asking me if I will ever go back and try online dating. I randomly signed up for Match.com in December 2012 and I met my match within a week so I entertained just a few calls and just went out on one date. Soon as I met my match, I immediately deactivated my account. So I don't really know all the pitfalls of online dating other than looks can be deceiving and it's a lot of work and a big distraction. The pictures I posted were accurate representations of what I look like on a daily. I always felt the need to treat others the way I'd want to be treated so I would respond to every message even to just say 'thanks but no thanks' and wish them well.

I don't know if I'm ready to jump out there again just yet. My heart was completely vested in my last relationship and I was literally ready to walk down the isle. Real feelings don't change that fast so I want to give myself a little time to make sure I'm ready and able to give to another. Plus, I think I was secretly hoping that my match would show up for me in the way I needed. So the review that I'm leading will be over in about a month. Maybe once I tie up loose ends on this project, I'll have the time, focus and energy to put into dating again. Maybe by then, the soul tie will be broken.

I've been doing a lot of reflecting and praying for answers as I try to understand the lessons I am to gain from my experiences so that my future is better and fruitful. There is a lesson in every challenging situation and I know I am and will be a better person for the experience and opportunity to love and be loved. What I'm really thankful about is that I didn't take a single moment, laugh, call, visit, morning text, etc. for granted. I really appreciated and took it all in and cherished everything. That's what I'm most happy about because when you forgive and forget the bad stuff, you have those really awesome moments to remember because you held such love and gratitude for them in the present moment.

I learned a lot about myself in this last year. I learned about a few insecurities (mostly surrounding my health & finances) but I also learned just how strong, brave, forgiving and loving that I am. I am and will always be a work in progress. The only constant is change I can definitely say that I'm changing and evolving in a positive direction. I may stumble, fall from my path from time to time but I always get up and find my way and I keep pressing forward. I know without a shadow of a doubt that I want to be happily married and I want to have children.

I don't know exactly how my future will unfold but I know it will exceed even my wildest imagination because God is awesome! Right now, I'm just focused on putting myself in the best position to win and still enjoy this life journey with a smile on my face.

Alvin Ailey Tickets...

A splurge in January that I made was tickets to see Alvin Ailey in Chicago at the Auditorium Theater. I get tickets every year and I am usually online within minutes or hours when they go on sale. I was a little late this year but I still got excellent seats. I think I will be in the 5th row which is awesome. One year I was in the first row and realized that the first row wasn't actually the best row in the house but 5th row through 10th row gives you a great view of the entire stage and dancers.

I love dancing and the arts so I am super excited. I look forward to events like Ailey every year. This Summer I am looking forward to Salsa Dancing in the park and all kinds of other goodies that Chicago has to offer. The next time I go to NYC, I would love the opportunity to take a class at Ailey. I missed out on my last visit but I will be sure to try to put it in the mix next time I get to visit. I love NYC. I love the energy but I still think I would prefer Chicago because NYC is massive. I will say that strolling through Central Park was the best. =)

January 2014 Summary...

Below is my January 2014 Summary. My Net worth stayed flat because it was holiday and vacation time and there was spending to go along with both.

My Sis, Brother-in-Law and I were thrilled to buy my parents a new kitchen table for Christmas to replace the one they had. I am pretty sure it was older than me! They rarely do anything for themselves and I know they commented many times about wanting a new table so I made the suggestion and my family got on board. Many years ago when I was in law school, I wanted to do something nice for my parents to say Thank You. So, I asked my sister and we decided that we would either send my parents on a trip or buy them a new bedroom set which was also badly in need of replacement. We were both hoping for the trip but they decided on the bedroom set and 'my oh my', they have expensive taste! I think I may still be paying for that bedroom set. lol So, this year, we asked if they would like a new table and WE picked out the table and chairs ourselves and found a very nice set within our designated budget. We even got them a new television for the kitchen so they're happy and we're happy. Score!

So all in all, Jan wasn't bad at and I am ready for an excellent year ahead! =)

52-Week Organizing Challenge...

I started the 52-Week Organizing Challenge this week. I am excited about the challenge because being organized brings me peace of mind and I welcome the opportunity to purge.

Week #1: Kitchen Counters & Sink

The Challenge for Week 1 was pretty easy for me. I used to have all kinds of flour and sugar canisters, etc. on my counters but I realized it all had to go last year since I have limited counter space. When I was purging last year with the pipe burst, I hauled all of that stuff out and gave it to the Salvation Army.

So the before pics in this case would have looked like these after pics with just a few things put away.

The Turbie Twist...

For my natural hair curlies that read my blog and worry about frizz, I have a product for you. I found it so randomly on one of my many trips to CVS during lunch downtown and it wasn't expensive. The product is called Turbie Twist and it's a 100% microfiber towel that loops your wet hair up and keeps it up while it dries. Love!

For months I tried to achieve the equivalent of big curly hair but I was pretty resolved that it wasn't going to happen because my hair is much more on the fine side. Then one day, my parents stopped by unexpectedly to help me take down my Christmas tree but they caught me while I was in the shower and my hair was drenched. So I threw some conditioner in my hair and remembered I bought the Turbie Twist. I tied my hair up, got dressed and we all put the tree and decorations up. Later, I pulled the Turbie loose and I had a full head of defined curls that just popped.

The towel absorbed the extra moisture and conditioner that weighed my hair down and I was left with super soft curls that were full of volume. After I took the towel down, it took maybe another 30-45 minutes for my hair to completely dry without using a blow dryer. Score!

So cheers to random finds at the store. I think I got a buy one get one half off deal and paid something like $10 for two turbie twists. These are perfect for travel. Of course I wanted the funky cute colors. =)

Loving Me...

There are moments in your life where you can look yourself in the mirror and be  absolutely proud of the person staring back at you. I had one of those moments today where I just looked at myself and saw love. I love who I am. People that I cross paths with are drawn to me and they tell me that I lift their spirits and they  smile and laugh with me. They feel comfortable with me and end up coming to me for advice or just as a person to listen to them without me offering my opinion. I have many friends and a few really close friends and I'm proud of who I am and my heart really is pure. I'm not a mean person and I have a good core. I come from good stock with an excellent and humble upbringing. I've seen and I've experienced struggle and even anguish and I've seen people pull themselves up from nothing. I've pulled myself up from feeling like nothing and those around me never even had a clue. I am that woman that will smile through hurt and pain, who will pray for the people who hurt or disappoint me and I am the woman that will get knocked down seven times and get back up eight times. I bet on me every single day and I know I am a winner. Life ebbs and flows. Just as fast as you can be up, you can be down but that's just the illusion of the outside world. Spirit, the core of who you are and the core of who I am remains the same and unchanging. It's love and when I remember who I am, I can't help but smile at the person in the mirror and feel acceptance and love. Having one of those moments when I know all is well and everything is unfolding exactly as it should and I just have to have faith and believe that my best days are ahead.

Auntie & Cleaning Duty...

This weekend is mostly about family and cleaning. My Sister and BIL are out of town so I'm on Auntie Duty to help out my parents who are keeping my nephew for the weekend. We went to his swim class this morning and to breakfast. We're planning to take him to see the Lego movie this afternoon which means nachos & popcorn! Yes! (Fist Pump...LOL)

I am also on sanitize the house duty since I've been home and sick with a nasty virus over the past week and a half. Everything needs a good wiping down so that's a big mission for this weekend. The 52-Week Cleaning Challenge starts for me tomorrow so I'm ready to organize & purge. I'm more of a minimalist at heart. Clutter is not my thing.

I may go out tonight but it's snowing pretty hard right now and while the weather isn't appealing for driving, it would be good for me to get out of the house, mingle and have some fun. I've been in a bit of a funk being sick, isolated and alone. You never know what blessing you may cross paths with on a random night out in the city.

Right now, I'm curled up on my couch watching the snow fall. Perhaps we'll throw in a snowball battle and some sledding this weekend. =)

Raggedy Struggling Chitown...

That moment you come home from a long day at work and go to hang up your work clothes and realize you have a giant hole in your shirt. I just took it off the dry cleaner hanger this morning.

In November, I was taking a magic marker to my high heeled boots because I'd worn the hell out of them and back and I couldn't afford to buy another pair until December. Raggedy.

Time for a shower and sleep. Shake my freaking head. I need to go shopping...

I Need Something Good...

Feeling a little crushed right now. Do you ever just need something good to happen to you? That's how I feel right now. I got some tough news today and there will be more to come at a later date but I just need something good and positive to happen to me and for me. So badly. Hope you guys have a good weekend.

Valentine's Day...

I am a sucker....I love Valentine's Day. I LOVEMESOMELOVE period! I love all the Hallmark Holidays. I know there's the theory and belief that every day should be Valentine's Day and it should. But on that day, I think I love it so much because there's an energy in the air that's so awesome. The collective vibration is higher on that day and you see more smiles and feel the positive energy.

I love happy surprises and spontaneity. I love flowers, candy and cards with meaningful words. I keep cards too. All of them. lol I look at them whenever I get down to remember that happy times are possible. I look back and smile because it happened and I didn't take a second of it for granted.

I love to see people happy, valued and appreciated. I love seeing couples walk hand in hand, sneaking a smooch or sharing a random hug while waiting for the streetlight to change. I love helping to plan surprises for others. It's fun. The smiles you get back are priceless.

My best friend is always telling me that the thing about me is that I believe in love and I do. I am that hopeless romantic. She'll say, "the problem with you Chitown is you believe in love!" I just roll my eyes and laugh. I do, I do, I do! It resonates with me. When I give love, I feel amazing. When I talk badly about someone or act ugly, I feel awful because that's not me at all. I am that peace, love and happiness person.

I don't like conflict and I try not to bring anything up unless it's going to matter a day from now, a week from now, a year from now. Nothing is perfect so I choose to see past the many imperfections and I try to only speak on the things I know make me feel bad to my core and spirit. Those are the things that will matter a day from now, week from now, year from now, period. Otherwise, you're like a boy who cried wolf. People don't know when it's a real make or break issue. I know I am not perfect and I am super sensitive when it comes to my feelings but I love hard and I love unconditionally.

I have that whole love conquers all mentality. lol Well it does. Because even when your heart is hurting and you feel broken in so many places to count, it's the love you have that can heal. Because when all the hurt and all the pain washes away with time, you realize that what was polishing you the entire time into the priceless gem that you are is love. In the end, that's all there is...Love.

So how are you guys spending your Valentine's Day?

Niagara Falls...

I got accepted into the Senior Leadership Program at the Bank which is a 10-month program to hone my leadership and management skills to take my career to the next level. My brother-in-law is finishing up the program but he already has direct reports. I'm proud of him too because he just got promoted.

Now, the exciting part. lol The training kicks off in June in Toronto so I will probably parlay that trip into my Niagara Falls mini vacation since it's only 1.5 hours away. So, the flight can be on the Bank's tab and a few of my readers have mentioned that the Canada side is way better. Oh Yeah!!! =)

I am leading a review right now but I would love to find myself on a beach or riding up the CA coast in March. Hey...why not both?!?! Sounds wonderful. I am going to put that desire out into the Universe. Sun and fun would make my heart smile and give me something to look forward to.

Under the Weather...

Today is Day 8 and I am still not right. My voice isn't back and I've got this cough and chest congestion. I'm pretty sure it's bronchitis but there's not much that can be done that I'm not doing. I just have to hope and pray it doesn't turn into anything serious like pneumonia with this weather.

It's snowing pretty hard today and I saw one multi-car accident on my way to the train station. Our side of the street was almost blocked off. I was rushing a little this morning but stopped when my garage door wouldn't stay closed. I needed a shovel to knock down some of the snow and ice. Thankfully, I keep a small shovel in my trunk. I was on my way three minutes later but it looked like that accident might have occurred 5 minutes before I came upon it so I just think God was looking out. Whew!

I haven't seen my family in a week and I've been feeling alone and isolated. I was pretty sick and my Dad is just getting back from his surgery a couple of weeks ago so I didn't want to put him or my family at risk but especially him with his heart condition. My Mom stopped by to bring me meds over the weekend but she just came to the door to drop the stuff off. She called to ask me if I wanted dinner Monday night and I said sure and would come over and she was like...."ehhh...your sister can bring it to you!" LOL....I can't blame her. My house needs to be sanitized and I still sounded awful with no voice. I just told her I would make a salad and some soup at home. She felt bad but I told her not to worry about it and I'll get better soon.

So it's just been me on my own. (Sigh)

2014 Debt Reduction Plan...

Here is my debt reduction plan for 2014. This is the best case scenario. I will be happy with $20k-$25k in debt reduction but I am going for the gusto so I can be free sooner rather than later.

The promotional rate on my BofA credit card balance transfer was set to expire this month so I took advantage of two-0% transfer offers to my Chase and Capital One Credit Cards. This year, Chase is limiting balance transfers to $15,000 every 30-days. My current credit card balance is $17,100. So, I transferred $15,000 to Chase at 0% until 4/2015 with a 2% balance transfer fee so the new balance on my Chase card will be $15,300. I transferred the remaining $2,100 to my Capital One Miles card at 0% for 12 months with a 2% balance transfer fee so the new balance is $2,142. In April after quarter end, I am going to liquidate my ESPP stock and pay off the balance on my Capital One card and continue to pay $200/month towards my Chase card reducing the balance to $13,300 by year end. That will be my lowest credit card balance since 2009.

I will continue to liquidate stock every six months. With the bi-weekly pay schedule, twice a year I receive two extra paychecks. This year that will be in July and December. My annual bonus which was approx. $13,000 after taxes this year will also payout in December. To continue to make progress throughout the year, I will reduce Private Loan #1 by $2,400 in July, by $2,400 in October with stock sales and $2,400 again in December. Then, I will pay off the remaining balance on Private Loan #1, pay off Private Loan #2 and any remaining funds will go to reduce Private Loan #3.

So along with regular monthly payments, that will bring my debt reduction total to well over $20,000 for 2014 and then the following year, I will repeat with an additional $12,000 payout in December when my stock options vest. So, the goal is a minimum of $50,000 over the next two years and I know I can do it because I know it's possible.

In the meantime, I have $10,000 in reserves for car repairs, emergencies, etc. I will not be replacing The Green Machine (My Nissan Altima) anytime soon. Focus Chitown!

Back to Work...

I go back to work tomorrow but I'm still feeling icky. My head is hurting, my neck is hurting, my throat is hurting and I have sinus pressure. My voice is about 80% back. Time for meds and bed. I haven't been out of the house since I got home on Friday evening. I guess it will be nice to mix and mingle with the rest of the human population tomorrow.

I just finished watching Love N Hip Hop Reunion Part #1 and it's just fun and foolishness. Women putting themselves out there for these men and getting so little in return. Women so hurt that they are lashing out in anger. Smoke & Mirrors. That's all this silly stuff is these days. It's entertainment.

Relationships aren't so complicated to me. I believe it takes two things. Love and Commitment. Love is God and God is Love. So love is really unconditional. God doesn't show up to love you or want you only when you do this or that or better yet, only show up to love you when you do something the way he wants. True love is unconditional. It's the choice to be committed to the relationship that allows the love to continually heal wounds over time and flourish. There is no doubt that the person you love will hurt you and disappoint you from time to time. People are so imperfect that it's inevitable that they will disappoint you at some point or another. Most of the time, it's not even on purpose but the impact is still the same. It takes commitment to show up every day for your relationship. Love is the continual flow of Grace and Mercy.

Time for meds & bed. Good financial post coming tomorrow. Sweet dreams!

I am a Peyton Manning Fan! The Guy is a Gamer and a good sport off the field.

52-Weeks To An Organized Home Challenge

Have you ever heard about the 52-Weeks to an Organized Home Challenge?

I was reading Beachgirl's Budget Blog over the weekend and she and her fiancée are going the challenge. I clicked on the challenge link and read a little more and it sounds pretty cool. What is really nice is that you get an entire week to work on the task as opposed to most cleaning challenges that give you a day. I am going to try it because I love to be organized.

Here is the list of challenges. Just like the 52-Week Money Challenge, you can start whenever and it's not too late. I am going start next week and try to catch up when there is a week that doesn't apply (i.e. I don't have an attic to organize in a condo). I'll post pics and keep you posted like Beachgirl.

I love positive challenges and projects.

Wish List Items...

Here is a picture of the Le Creuset French Oven we used to make the gumbo in cooking class. It looks just like the one below that's open to show all the yummy goodness. I like the color too. At first I was open to a smaller oven pot but I do hope to expand beyond cooking just for me so I will need a larger pot to accommodate. If I am going to get one, I may as well get the one that will remain with me for the long haul. This pot is about $300.

Here is the wallet style that I would like to go with my purse. I am usually not a signature gal but if you get more than one style of LV purse, the signature can probably go with either style and you won't necessarily "need" to get a new matching wallet. The wallets cost almost as much a a purse. This one costs about $725. Cute but expensive. =)

Seattle Seahawks...

Man that was a brutal Superbowl game to watch. I am a Peyton Manning fan but I have to give props to the Seattle Seahawks for showing up to play tonight! I mean they were ready and on point. You could tell from the very first snap that the Broncos weren't laser sharp and ready. I honestly didn't care who won the game and just wanted to be entertained by a good game and great commercials.

My hat is off to the Seahawks! They kicked butt tonight!

Called the Doc...

My Sis called and told me to call the doc's emergency line so she could call me in a prescription. I just called. Thankfully, the woman could understand me. Just waiting to hear back from the doc. My Mom said she'll go pick up the prescription when she calls it into Walgreens. So thankful for my family. So blessed to have them. No matter what, they show up and I show up for them. That's true love. Blessed! Hopefully, I'll finally be on the road to feeling better.

*** Update: Doc called back and my symptoms point to a viral infection vs. bacterial so there are no antibiotics she can prescribe. I can only rest, push fluids, try not to talk and treat the symptoms. My Mom brought by more meds and I'm resting. Losing your voice is also more indicative of a viral infection. I have a tiny voice already so I am barely audible now. It's cool. She said it will be better in a few days. If not, to call back. I have Musinex now and that stuff is powerful.

52-Week Money Challenge...

Finally! A Financial Post! =)

Has anyone ever heard of the 52-Week Money Challenge? Neither had I until my sister told me she and my brother-in-law were going to try it for fun. We were at Winter Wonderland at Navy Pier just chatting away while my nephew got on every slide and ride he could find.

Anyway, she text me the 52-Week Challenge Table and it looked simple enough to give it a try. You start with $1 on the first week and increase by $1 each week until you're putting in $52 the final week for a grand total of $1,378 to spend on whatever. There is even a table for if you'd rather do the challenge based on your bi-weekly pay schedule.

Some people use a jar but I decided this could be fun and I'm using one of my ING/Capital One 360 Savings Accounts and just gave the account a new nickname for the challenge. Every Friday, I make a transfer into the account and it's  done.

You can start the challenge whenever. As one blog pointed out, it may not be the best challenge to start at the beginning of the year because the higher deposit weeks of $49/$50/$51/$52 will come around Christmas time but that's perfect for me since that's also bonus time.

The concept flows with the whole slow and steady wins the race. The whole premise is that what you deposit into your challenge jar or account will accumulate. Perhaps one week you don't have the entire amount the challenge calls for and that's just fine. Don't beat yourself up. Simply put the amount you can deposit into the jar/account, cross off the week and keep it moving. It's supposed to be fun and you get a nice surprise in the end. Money to spend on you, a loved one, make a charitable contribution, give it to a stranger in need or a combination of things. It's your choice so have fun with the challenge and start whenever you please.

I decided to start at the beginning of January and I have $15 saved already. I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes throughout the year. =)

Tears...

I'm weak. I'm crying. 5 days straight of feeling like crap and I don't know if I'm getting any better. There's so much pain and I know I've already taken too much ibuprofen and cold medicine. I will definitely call the doctor tomorrow morning for antibiotics. I didn't want to deal with a ridiculous medical bill from urgent care just for them to prescribe me a z-pack.

It's times like this when I wish I had a partner. Someone to lean on who wouldn't mind making a bowl of soup or making a cup of tea or putting a load of laundry in so I can rest. Doing it all on my own still. I know God's plans are bigger than my own. I just have to surrender it all and believe he'll turn it around for good. I just have to remember that he won't put more on me than I can handle.

I am going to email my new Team Lead and hopefully he will look at his Blackberry today. I am pretty sure I won't make into the office tomorrow for 3 meetings we have scheduled in the morning. Hopefully he can cover them or I can reschedule. I haven't had a voice since Thursday evening and my parents couldn't even understand me on the phone yesterday so I had to text them.

It's going to be okay. This too shall pass.

Gabby Douglas...

I just finished watching the Gabby Douglas movie on Lifetime. What an incredible young lady and inspirational story. She had such passion and laser focus to succeed at her goal of going to the Olympics. The age old adage that it takes a village to raise a child reigns true in her life. Family and strangers coming together to help her succeed and in the end become intricate parts of a journey that would inspire a country and many young children across the world. Love!

Virus Beat Down...

It's 10:30 and I am still in the bed and I can't say I have any plans to move anytime soon. My throat is on FIRE!!! The coughing seems to have subsided a little primarily because I just won't cough. My throat hurts too bad. Now my sinuses are trying to start back up again. I'm usually pretty tough but Chitown is taking a serious beat down with this virus.

I've tried everything. Advil Cold N Sinus, Vicks Vapor Rub, Ricolas, Ibuprofen Rest and Tea.

Part of me is tempted to go to Urgent Care which is literally in walking distance but I know there is not much they are going to be able to do but give me a z-pack and send me home. I'm not running  a fever and there is less pressure on my chest so I can breathe. My throat just hurts really bad and I still don't have a voice so no talking for me today.

I have three meetings scheduled for Monday morning so I have to get better and fast. Today is the day I usually go skiing with my Sister and Brother-in-Law up in Lake Geneva, WI which is right over the IL border but I'm glad we decided a couple of weeks ago to bypass the trip this year. There is no way I could take to the slopes today. I'd be on the sidelines drinking the hot apple cider while everyone else endulged in all the fun.

The weather has been so funky in Chicago. Following the mildest Summer in my recent memory, we've already experienced a brutal winter and it's snowing more right now.

I am looking forward to feeling better and to Spring and Summer. The bright side is that I'll be in the house all day so I won't spend any money. Hope you guys have a great day.

Buying to Feel the Feeling...

I just had a thought since I was just talking about Louis Vuitton.

Have you ever bought something you know you have no business buying just to feel the feeling of having it and to know you can? I did this recently. My boss invited me to makeovers at the Bobby Brown counter at Bloomingdales and then we walked over to the Louis Vuitton store on Michigan Avenue and Oak Street. Let me tell you something, you would never think we were in a recession the way women and men were buying and walking around with bags on Oak Street. That's where all of the high end stores and boutiques are downtown Chicago. My best friend used to work at a Bank on Oak Street when we graduated from college and I remember just thinking "Wow" when I'd taxi up there to have lunch with her. It reminded me of Pretty Woman when Vivian was on Rodeo Drive. lol

Anyway, after the makeovers, we all walked over to the Louis Vuitton store and I fell in love with a handbag. The girls convinced me (it wasn't too hard) to buy it since I never buy myself anything nice and it was bonus time. I bought it. I took it home. I looked at the box in the bag all day Sunday and promptly took the damn thing back on Monday. I never even took if out if the pretty wrapping. I remember feeling so much lighter having the $2,500 back in my account. It was just nice knowing that if I wanted to buy the bag, I could have without adding anymore debt to the equation. It's nice knowing that with focus and diligence, I'll soon be able to walk into stores and buy a handbag and bad *ss shoes without guilt. That's going to be fun.

Okay...I'm really going to bed now. lol

Friday...

I am so thankful that it's Friday and I can relax and recuperate this weekend. You know those people coughing and sneezing on the train or in closed quarters where you just want to run away?!?! Well that was totally me today. I couldn't even look people in the eye. Praying that I feel better by Monday. Good news is that I called my Mom and she's feeling good. Knowing her, she'll pop over tomorrow to check on me. She's pretty awesome like that and really thoughtful.

The cooking class last night was so much fun. I ran out of steam around 8:45
but we still had about 15 more minutes of  cooking to do. The menu was crab cakes with a remoulade sauce, chicken and andouille sausage gumbo, and bananas foster bread pudding with vanilla bean ice cream. Yum! Yum! Yum! I learned a lot and it was much easier than I imagined. I didn't get home until about 11pm and my eyes were crossing by the time I said my prayers and climbed into bed. So worth it. I thought about canceling since I caught this virus but I didn't want to let my friend down, we had to give 24 hours notice of cancellation or pay the entire fee and the class was my idea. So, I took some meds and feverishly washed my hands a million times. I can't wait to recreate the recipes.

They almost got me last night. They used this amazing Le Creuset stock pot for the gumbo and then wanted to offer everyone 20% off anything in the store. I wanted that freaking pot but it was like $280 for the size they used. That sucker had to stay in the store. I'll put it on my wish list and pin it to Pinterest.

I am a huge huge fan of Pinterest. I have over 7,000 pins (don't judge me...lol). I even set up a private vision board where I pin and upload all the things I want to manifest. So I'll pin the pot to my board to go along with the compact zippy Louis Vuitton wallet. I have a beautiful Louis Vuitton purse but I feel like a purse fraud without having a nice wallet to pair with it. I've been told that I look silly pulling out my $40 smartphone wallet with a $4,000 purse. lol It's totally pinned to my vision board and I'll get it eventually.

Some of the other things pinned are trips I would love up take to Africa, Italy and Hawaii. Then I pinned things I'd like in a home and even the SUV I would like. Rounding out the pinning is home life stuff I'd like to experience like getting married and having children. Pinterest is a lot if fun. I recommend giving it a try.

Well the coughing is picking up again so I think I'll take my butt to bed. Have a great weekend and GO BRONCOS!!! I'm a Peyton Manning fan. =)

Sick as a Dog...

It's official...Chitown is out for the count!!! Man Down!!! Code 10!!! =(

My alarm for work is set to go off at 5:30am but my head is pounding and I can't stop coughing. So I'm wide awake. It's a serious cough too. I lost my voice. I'm a mess. My chest hurts. My breathing is compromised. My inhaler is on standby. I have zero energy.

I need to go into the office to get some files and print off some info but then I think I'm coming straight home. I will definitely be in the house all weekend getting better. Darn! I never get sick! I don't even think I caught a cold last year.

I called my Mom last night and she thinks she's coming down with something so I need to check on her today as well.

WooSaa!!!

Chest Cold & Cooking Class...

I decided to work from home today. I didn't feel well yesterday at work but I had a jammed packed schedule and I had to kick off a new review that I am leading this quarter. My calendar was open today so I decided to stay home. I just had a terrible sinus headache and a pesky cough. I still have the cough but it's much better and the headache is long gone. Thank goodness. My nephew was running a slight fever with a cough over the weekend and we were playing together so I probably caught something from him. No biggie. I am tough gal.

Cooking

I am looking forward to taking a cooking class with my friend this evening. It's been planned for a few weeks and I am so excited to learn something new...not to mention enjoy some wine and laughter. =) Good friendships are priceless and we always have a blast together.

Cooking more is one of my goals for this year along with working out and doing some traveling. I love to cook but never learned when I was younger. I was too busy playing sports, in clubs and taking honor classes. My Grandmother was an amazing cook and my Mom is as well. The food they know how to cook isn't always the healthiest but it's damn good. lol My Mom has been showing me things here and there and it's just great to learn something new.

My Dad & Nephew

My Dad is healing great from his surgery to get a defibrillator. I stopped by last night to see my Mom and Dad and he's even back to doing some hip hop abs but he can't lift his arms over his head yet. My nephew's school is closed today and tomorrow so I am sure my nephew enjoyed doing his ab work with his Paw Paw. It's the cutest thing to see him try to mirror everything like my Dad and Brother-in-Law and it's really hard to imagine that he's going to turn 5 next month. Time really flies but I am so in love with my nephew. He makes my heart smile just thinking about him and he keeps me young at heart. I laugh and smile so much when he's around. The other day he was giving me my instructions for when I babysit him. His words. "Tee Tee, when you babysit me, you have to cook dinner. Then in the morning, you have to cook me a BIG breakfast!" I almost fell off the couch because he kept going with his instructions. I was like, "I need a pin to write all this down." Too cute.

Well, I hope you guys have a great day. It's so nice to be blogging again. It was nice to take a little break but I missed it here on Windy City Blues to Bliss. Thanks Scooze and ShellyShell for hanging in there with me and for leaving a comment yesterday. =)

Freezing Weather = Work From Home

We got to work from home yesterday and today due to the subzero temps in Chicago. My brother-in-law braved the weather but I slept in and worked from home. We don't get this opportunity that often and well, I didn't feel like losing my face on Michigan Avenue. I was walking on the train platform last week and all of a sudden a burst of wind came and I threw my arms over my face like OMG! OMG! Felt like I was being slapped in the face. I love working from home. I spend less money and for once, I had plenty of groceries. I didn't spend any money the last two days. Score! =)

I just went out to start my car and let it run for 10 minutes. All is well in that area and my car is holding up good. We're supposed to get a heat wave this weekend with temps returning to the 20 degree range. (Chitown rolls her eyes...lol) So, I will go to the car wash and have them knock some of the snow and salt off my car and clean up the inside.

Tonight I am going to cook dinner and then curl up on the couch to watch Obama's State of the Union address.

Happy New Year

Hi All and Happy New Year! I hope and pray that it will be a Happy New Year for you and your families.

I am staying prayerful that this will be a year of Greater and a year for Wishes Fulfilled. My Dad is having a heart procedure on Thursday so I am asking for your prayers and I thank you in advance.

I finished off 2013 strong financially. I did the very best I could do with all that I was juggling and it was a blessed year. I squeaked by and I don't know how I managed. Wait! Yes I do...God! After August, I didn't have more than $500 in free cash to my name but I made it happen. Below is a snapshot of December 2012 and December 2013 so you can see the progress.  I really tried to put my best foot forward.

As you may recall, I went back to my Financial Advisor in the Spring with all kinds of spreadsheets, information and projections to see if there was anything more I could do to put myself on a better path and to better prepare for having a family. He wasn't surprised since he remembered my spreadsheets from back when I was just 24 years old. lol  After talking with me and reviewing all of my information, he concluded that I was doing my best and that I was on the right path. The only thing he wished I could do was contribute to my company's 401k which has a matching program of 100% up to 5% of my salary.

So in July, I bit the bullet and started back contributing to my 401k. That change reduced my monthly income an additional $400. I started the year bringing home $5,700/month and that decreased to $4,600/month by the end of the year with the roll off of the middle class tax cuts, switch to bi-weekly pay schedule, my 5% 401k contributions and then my 5% ESPP contributions. So after July, things were beyond tight. The ESPP is a great plan and the stock and company are solid. I get to purchase stock on a quarterly basis at a 15% discount and I can sell it immediately. The only cost is $20 to sell the stock. I started in the last quarter as a way to force myself to save 5% and I contributed $1,100. Now, I have $1,300 in stock value to liquidate. Not bad. It forces me to save and I get to make a profit. All in all, I am on the right path and I am making progress.

 * Other: Stock Options @ Cost - Vesting 12/2015
Current Market Value ~ $12,400

Thankful...

I got to spend the day with my parents. My Mom and I ran out to the mall together and my Dad decided to tag along. Fun! When we got back home, my nephew came over to spend the night with my parents and for a little while, the whole core crew was together.  I don't take a single moment for granted. Blessed! =)

TGIF...

Today was a good day. I woke up super sleepy but I got up, gave my thanks for waking up and got the day started.

It seemed like I saw a lot of my friends and associates today at work and outside of work. I ran into a lot of close associates in the cafeteria this morning. Some of whom were on my list to check-in with because I haven't seen them in a while and they work in other departments. Then I went for chocolate run with my friend Karen and had lunch with another co-worker. I walked to get tea with my BFF and then I had dinner with another good friend. It was just an awesome day that way. =)

Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend. God wiling, it will be an awesome and relaxing weekend for me too. Cheers!

Credit Card Balance Transfer...

It's about that time of the year again when the promotional rate on my credit card expires and I look to transfer the balance to another card. The last couple of years I have switched back and forth between Chase to Bank of America. I stopped using my other credit cards and those were closed by the issuer over the years due to non-usage. So all I really have left is American Express, Bank of America, Capital One and Chase.

Chase is offering me a 0% rate through 2/2015 with a 2% balance transfer fee...Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!!!! I will make the transfer at the beginning of December. It will add $350 to the balance but the transfer fee is much less than the 4% I paid last year to move the balance to Bank of America.

Below is a chart showing my balances at the beginning of the year and my balances as of November. As you can see, I am going to have to accelerate debt payments in order to really reduce these balances over the next few years.

Meditiation Challenge....

Now that I am back to work, the Meditation Challenge has been a struggle. I am on Day 10 and I haven't missed a day but doing the meditation in the morning is much better than when I am getting ready to sleep at night. Simply put, I need to get up at least an hour early to get in the 20 Minutes of meditation and 40 minutes of exercise to get my day started off on the right foot. Once I get home, I tend to think only of dinner, shower, rest and relaxation.

I am trying to finish up my online compliance training due at the Bank before 11/30/13. I had seven courses to take and I finished five this morning. Speed reading and then taking the test at the end. It's the same training each year with only small modifications so passing the tests with an 80% or better hasn't been an issue.

I am heading over to Macy's in a few minutes with my co-worker Eric for something called Fellowship Loop. Fellowship is a church on the south side of Chicago that offers downtown church service. I don't remember the frequency. We used to go all the time, but my work schedule hasn't allowed. This month, my calendar was clear so I asked him if he wanted to go. He is the one who got me to attend the first time and it was pretty cool.

Well I am off. Have a wonderful Wednesday! Hump Day Baby! =)

Quasi Interview....

I had a quasi lunch interview today and it went very well. My only hurdle is lack of management experience although I am confident that I can do the job. We were talking so much that we ran out of time. I appreciate when that happens with pure strangers. Now that I have an idea of the position, we are going to follow-up again next week so I have some time to think about the position and formulate some questions. The possibility is exciting and I welcome the opportunity to challenge myself to grow and learn something new.

I know I am just getting back to work but I am already looking forward to the weekend and putting up my Christmas Tree which I always try to do the weekend before Thanksgiving. I asked my brother-in-law today if he has time this weekend to help. I know my Dad will be around. It doesn't take too long. I get the thing out of the garage and open it up. Then they come over and string all of the lights and put on the bulbs. My nephew helps me with all the other decorations and he gets chocolate chip cookies in exchange. I like a lot of color so no plain white Christmas trees in the Chitown Family. lol I will post a picture after we get it all set up and twinkling. Just thinking about snuggling on the couch with some hot chocolate and carols playing makes me smile. =)

The Holidays for me mean God, Thankfulness, Family and Love and that's more than enough to put a smile on my face. I am truly blessed!

Vacation...

It's a pretty gloomy day here in Chicago. One of those days when you curl up on the couch with a good book and a cup of tea or watch your shows on DVR. I may do a mixture of both today.

I wish I was on a flight to a sunny beach somewhere. That would be amazing. I love love love to travel, feel the warm sun on my skin and get out for a run to take in more of the scene. I love the sound and peace of the ocean. I can almost hear it now as I type. The beach in Ft. Lauderdale was perfect.

I would also love to travel to a spa. I've had my eye on Miraval in AZ for a few years. I like to take breaks from the ripping and running to just be still and at peace. I also love a great massage and I've never had a facial before. It's on my list of things to experience.

I had a great day yesterday. I got to the early Church service and as always, Pastor Hannah's message was amazing. We have one of the best praise and worship teams in the Country. They're doing something different this month introducing light worship and they brought in the strings to accompany the band and the music stirred the soul. Amazing! Then the Pastor was moved by a line in the song and stirred up the entire congregation and the energy in the place skyrocketed and you could feel the spirit. It's something special to be a part of and I am so thankful to have found a church home after not growing up in the church at all.

We had a great time together at the chili cook off. I am so thankful my brother-in-law has some great friends with children around my nephew's age. He's an only child so I was just thrilled to see him have kids to play with yesterday and he played hard for about 8 hours straight with no nap! He was ready to fall out! LOL. He's the cutest little kid and he's got such a positive spirit. I love him unconditionally. The rest of us had a great time in fellowship and my parents even stuck around for a few hours. Great time! I am so incredibly blessed!

I am starting this 21-day meditation challenge today with Deepak Chopra. I think it would be cool to go to the Chopra Center one day for a retreat. I will let you guys know how it turns out. I've tried the challenges before but I never completed one start to finish. I am going to try to make it a daily practice to meditate twice a day for at least 15 minutes. They say the medical benefits of just that small amount of time is measurable especially with stress reduction.

Have a great day!

October 2013 Recap...

October was a busy but decent month. I posted a slight $554 improvement in my net worth. My cash resources are dwindling a bit but they will be replenished next month. Overall, it wasn't too bad.  I still have to adjust my personal spending which is always a constant battle especially during high emotional times and when I am on the go which is an understatement with work being crazy. All in all, not bad at all.

My retirement account is sitting right around $52k right now. I started contributing 5% a few months ago. I will make adjustments to any investment and property accounts on a quarterly basis instead of annually starting next month.

Paid in Full...

The weekend is here and guess what?!?? I don't have to work!!! Yes!!! My condo needs a serious cleaning so I am working on that right now. I was going to do it last night but my train was delayed and I didn't get home in time.

I just made a deposit in the Bank this morning so I can pay my monthly expenses. I will be able to pay everything off in full. Thanks to being reimbursed for my expenses in Madison, I will have a couple hundred dollars to get me through November. Thankful!!!

All will be well and better once December comes along. Hard to believe I'll be 36 in exactly one month! Not exactly where I want to be but thankful I'm not where I was just a short time ago.

Have a great weekend! =)

Cloud 9....

I am soooo happy right now! I submitted my draft report yesterday and my close-out meeting went fabulous this morning! My boss was very happy and pleased with my presentation and work product especially with the tight deadline. So so happy! I had my whole family praying for me to do well and I aced it!!! Yes!!!

I cannot wait for the weekend. I am definitely going to get myself to the movies. I am behind and there were some good movies that came out over the last couple of weeks.

I can't wait to see my nephew in his Ninja costume for Halloween! He's such a cutie pie and just a great 4 year old. Love Him!

Chitown is on Cloud 9 right now!!! I am closing out this month on a strong and positive note!!!!

Chitown Down But Not Out....

I am struggling...4 straight days with a terrible headache and I have been working like crazy!!!! I finally got my draft report approved and sent out this morning and I will have a close-out meeting tomorrow. I felt so awful last night, my eyes were twitching, my head was hurting and I was super nauseous . I got home around 9pm, took a shower and I was asleep by 10pm and that's not me at all. I am a total night owl. I didn't even eat dinner. I just couldn't wait to get into the bed and go to sleep.

My godfather was back in the hospital after falling on Sunday and dislodging his trache. He'd just had surgery on Friday so that was a bit of a scare because he was having trouble breathing. He's back home and resting. I love that Man. His walk in life is not easy having survived throat cancer but no longer having the ability to eat or drink. Puts a lot of things in perspective.

I am looking forward to the weekend so I can just relax. 11 more days and then I have a week off for vacation. It's been a tough couple of months but I am still managing to keep a smile on my face.=)

Massage...

I just had the most AMAZING massage and it was FREE FREE FREE!!! My Mom knew I was having a hard time with work and she could see me working from 8-8 weekdays and on the weekends. She made the appointment for me. She is the BEST!!! So thankful!!! =)

The massage therapist was excellent. She said my shoulders and neck were so tight and I feel so much better. Woo Hoo!!! Giddy!!!

Weekend...

I survived the long weekend!  I worked until about 8:30 Friday night and worked all weekend with the exception of going to my nephew's swim practice and a birthday dinner/outing for a friend on Saturday.  I came back into work after Church yesterday and worked until close to 9pm.  The good news is I got my report drafted and I think I might have set a record.  What took me close to 2 months to complete earlier this year, only took me 3 weeks.  I spent a week in Madison, managed a team of 9 people to get all of the work completed and then I scrubbed the data last week and now I am under the gun to get my draft approved and out this week.  I am proud of myself because I know that with my Team Lead under a lot of pressure to meet the month-end fiscal year reporting, I was probably the best person for the job to Lead this Review.  Hopefully the rest of the week will go smoothly and I will finally have a nice weekend after working 3 weekends in a row.  Chitown might even get herself a massage!  Oh yeah!!!

It's funny how people can make such a profound impact on you when you are young.  I was probably in 6th grade when my sister's high school volleyball coach told me that I was "probably the most talented kid she had ever met but I was able the most laziest kid she had ever met!"  That struck such a nerve with me and I made a compete 180 and got myself together.  The next two years, I was in the National Junior Honor Society after not turning in most of my homework in previous years, I graduated in the Top 5 of my high school class and I graduated from Northwestern University having played Division I Softball and earning my degree in Economics.  Now I am a VP, Lawyer and I am on a great path.  One thing I can say about ME is that Chitown is NOT LAZY!!! =)

I hadn't been out in so long with my friends for dinner and dancing and I love, love, love to dance. It's probably the only time I like to wear heels because I get to dance. A birthday was the perfect opportunity to boogie!!! I had a blast. We went to a place called Alhambra Palace for dinner and then walked down the street to a place called Red Kiva for more fun and dancing. Alhambra had a belly dancing troop that put on a performance from about 8:30-10:00pm. The performance was pretty cool and I had a good time.  The most important thing is that my friend had a great time and a great birthday. I was sooo pooped, I had to sit in my car for a good 20 minutes before I could even drive home Saturday night. =)

I am trying to figure out how in the world I am going to pay my credit card bill off at the end of the month. I am looking at a shortage of about $100-$200. I have the cash but I don't want to deplete all of my cash resources. Adding in the weekly counseling sessions is costly but I will be fine going forward and the sessions have been pretty awesome to get me back on solid footing.

Hope you guys had a great weekend. That's about all folks. This will be the last super busy week but I am in the homestretch and I will be free to relax this weekend. Yeah!!!

Loss of Classmate...

I got home this evening to find out my high school classmate died after giving birth just 9 days ago. She was so ecstatic about being a mom and you could tell she was already in love with her son. My heart is heavy. She had a beautiful and positive spirit.

It's a wake up call not to take people and time for granted. A person can literally be here today and gone today. Not just tomorrow. Tell and show the people who matter most to you that you love them. Let go of the foolishness and stuff that doesn't matter. Be happy.

Vacation....

I woke up this morning with vacation on my mind. I have a week off from work next month during the week of Veteran's Day and two weeks at Christmas. I need to find myself on a beach somewhere. I made it to FL this summer but the trip wasn't as relaxing as I'd hoped and ended pretty badly so I am not counting that as vacation, rest and relaxation. If I can't make it to the beach, I would love to go to a spa as well. I'll have to look into some options after this busy week is over.

Saturday was good. I finally had some "me time" after working 6 days in a row. I did some laundry and gave myself a manicure I watched the first and second episodes of Scandal. Awesome!!! I went to get a pedicure and then I was off to see my parents and nephew. Perfect day!

I am rolling out of bed so I can make it to Church and then I have to hit the Library or Starbucks to do some work. Mom is cooking Sunday dinner so I'll be grubbing well this evening.

Happy Sunday!!! =)

Bitter Sweet....

I got some great news today. All of my bloodwork came back clean and there are no issues with my kidneys or my liver!!! Yes!!!

The not so great news is that my Mom just told me my godfather is in the hospital. So I will be heading home from Madison on Friday and going straight to the hospital to see him. He's an amazing man. I get my love of dance from him. He is an African Dancer and can even walk on stilts. He had me and my sister in African dance classes at a young age. My Mom isn't a people person and she's a pretty good judge of character. She absolutely loves my godfather. He's my Dad's childhood friend and he's near an dear to me and my sister.

My godfather had throat cancer and has a permanent trache so he can't eat or drink. He's kind of pulled away from everyone in the last couple of years. Living with a permanent feeding tube in your stomach and not being able to swallow even water is a very hard existence and life. The measure of his strength cannot be understood. I am very proud of him and I love him very much.

I know it's hard on my parents. They're 65/64 and funerals are becoming commonplace for classmates and known associates. Our neighbor of 20+ years was just laid to rest last week. It's scary facing the reality that my parents are aging. I am thankful for every call I get to make to them, every visit, every time I get to kiss them on their foreheads, hug them, tell them I love them and have them tell me back and know without a shadow of a doubt they do indeed. Thankful!

Madison, WI Trip...

Day 3 of the review project went well and we are on Target for a Friday finish. I have a great team with me even if not all of my co-workers are well versed in commercial real estate. The hotel is nice. The company is great. The work is interesting.  Good things all around.

Here is the view from my room of Lake Monona. =)

September 2013 Summary...

My net worth took a slight dip this month. I cannot complain considering I had close to $1,200 in car and house repairs to make. I could have done a little better on my personal spending but all in all, it wasn't a bad month. I did a little emotional eating out but that's slowed down once I settled down. Below is a snapshot from Networthiq and a Budget Breakdown for September.

  • Housing: Met plan.
  • Utilities: $19 over plan with last month of $18 WW subscription
  • Transportation: Met plan with very slight $8 deviation.
  • Personal - Blew the budget by $308. Below is a breakdown.
    • Clothing & Shopping: $123

Let the Weekend Begin...

The weekend is finally here but this week flew by so fast.  It was a busy busy work week but productive.  I will heading to Madison, WI on Sunday afternoon for the week.  I am leading a review up there so it should be interesting and a learning experience. This is only my second review to Lead and this one is an onsite review so I will be representing the team. Fun!

It's Homecoming weekend for Northwestern so I have a few events to attend including an alumni softball game tomorrow. That's going to be fun. Looking forward to seeing some of my old teammates.

I am working on my September Financial Summary so hoping to post that by Monday.  The results are already posted on Networthiq. You can click on the net worth link to the top right of the page. All in all, I had just a $100 dip in my net worth which isn't bad considering I had close to $1,200 in car and home repairs for the month.

Performance reviews will wrap up by the end of the month and I will know my bonus and raise (if any) soon. Bonuses pay out in the middle of December.

My Dad met with his cardiologist yesterday. He will go for an Eco and Stress Test on my birthday actually, December 2nd, and then they will determine if he will need a defibrillator and/or pacemaker. We are hoping and praying that the meds strengthen his heart so he won't need another surgery. My Dad has been through so much since 2009. We all have really.

Have a wonderful weekend! =)

Doc Appt & Helping Others....

I get a kick out of helping others and doing for others. I almost think I get more out of the deal in the end. My Mentor asked me to talk with his niece who is a student at Yale. I've been communicating with her over the past few weeks via email and phone and got her resume into the right hands at the Bank. I think she a great hiring candidate and the people I spoke with today were impressed with her resume. The Bank has several training programs that give you a solid financial and banking foundation. Heads of both major programs have her resume in hand. I think it also helps that I stepped up for one of the Heads of the Business Banking program when he asked me a couple years ago to participate as a Mentor in the Bank's work-study program. I still work with my Mentee and he's now a senior in high school. I am helping him get ready for college now.

The doc visit went pretty good today. She moved to a new office which is really nice. A little further away but still downtown and only a taxi ride away. I never had to give more than 2 viles of blood before but they took 5 viles from me today to test my kidneys and liver. After three, my arm was screaming Uncle! I should have the results back on Tuesday.

It's Family Thursday which means I get to spend quality time with some of the best people on Earth including the love of my life, my four year old nephew.

Too blessed to be stressed! =)

October Already....

It's October already.  Wow!!!  Time is flying by and I'll be bundling up for Chicago Winter soon.  I love all four seasons and Fall is my favorite.  Things have been good but super busy.  The weekend was fun. Went to the movies Friday and Saturday, went to see my nephew swim, had brunch with the family and then had an unexpected visit from an old friend Saturday night which turned into Sunday morning.  It was a good time catching up. Church on Sunday, some cleaning up and then Sunday dinner with the family.  Good times.

I kicked off my review project on Tuesday so work will be busy busy for the next few weeks.  I leave for Madison WI on Sunday and will be working onsite there for the week.  Then it's a long Columbus Day weekend and I am looking forward to having some downtime and fun.  Before I know it, it will be November and I'll be decorating for Christmas. Yeah!!! I am such a holiday nerd. =)

I am doing well with my finances.  I will post a September Summary this week.  Onward and upward. Staying on target and staying on plan. Freedom tastes good!!!

Almost Friday...

Thank Goodness!!! I am really looking forward to the weekend and getting the opportunity to sleep in on Saturday and Sunday. I am going to stay up and do a deep clean on the condo this evening and then enjoy a very relaxing weekend. The weather is supposed to be amazing. One day I am going to plan a Fall Wedding. Fall in Chicago is awesome!!!

I am staying up and staying in good spirits. I have the most amazing family and friends. They really make my life seem rich. With them, I can escape the moments of loneliness that comes from living by myself and being quasi-single in the city. They love and support me 100%.

I think I am going to take my computer to Best Buy this weekend to see if they can repair it and do something about the virus I think is on my computer. I've made it over a year with my work computer and iPad but I really need a PC at home. Fingers crossed they can work a miracle. My mom has a new copy of Windows 6 so I am hoping they can get Vista off and install the new software. Then I will be ready to go and that will buy me another year on getting a new computer.

Hope you guys have a wonderful day! =)

Hit a Wall...

Boy oh boy did I hit a wall today. This month has been grueling with work off the chain and things going on in my personal life. I treated myself to lunch and then came home to pass out for about 3 hours. I just wanted a cat nap so I could go to the park but I was out for the count. Completely exhausted.

I enjoyed lying there and relaxing. Something I don't do too often and probably not often enough. It's usually GO-GO-GO until I pass out.

I am working on my weekend plans already. lol. I want to have some fun this weekend and I may try to get a massage. My Mom gave me a gift certificate so I'll try to get an appointment for Saturday to get some of this tension out of my neck and shoulders. Church on Sunday and I may try to check out the new movie Baggage Claim coming out this weekend.

I had a plumber come out yesterday to rod the condo main line so I have full use of my kitchen again. Now I can cook a little more and take leftovers for lunch. That would save me some moola if I could bring my lunch at least 2 times a week. Thumbs up!

Now it's back to working out. I am starting Insanity next week so that's a solid 60-day program. I'll be done by my 36th birthday in December. I'll be in the best shape ever and that's the best birthday gift I give myself. Good health and happiness. Cheers!

Hump Day...

I had Jury Duty today. I was sitting there doing some work and hoping to get called and dismissed early. Well I never got called and we were dismissed at lunchtime. Perfect! I did my duty.

Now how shall I spend the rest of my day?!?! I need to work but it's a beautiful day. There's no law against working in the park or outside somewhere else. Fun!

Finance & Fitness Update...

I wanted to come by and give a quick update. Things are going well but it's been a crazy few weeks with my Dad in the hospital, the marathon, more car issues and usual working/life.

Good news is my Dad is doing great and my car is doing better. I finished the half marathon in 2:31, two minutes faster than my time in 2011 so I'm pleased.

Spending has been so so but I haven't done horribly at all despite all the craziness the last couple of weeks. I've been successfully experimenting with some less expensive hair products so I've managed to cut down even more.

I managed to cut my spending a little over the last month so I didn't have to use my entire $1,000 eFund for the $1,050 in car repairs. My CC bill gets paid at the end of the month and I should have roughly $500 leftover in the eFund.

After taking a week off, I have to get back to working out and figuring out what's next for me. I think I'll go back to the Insanity Program from Beach Body.

Day 13 Finance & Fitness Challenge....

Good Morning!

My Dad is still in the hospital.  He should be discharged today and will have to go back in 3 weeks for a stress test.  There is a high likelihood that he will need to get a defibrillator and possibly a pacemaker in the next 3-6 months.  It's just been a scary few days. He's on a diuretic to remove the excess fluid that was building in his body and he's feeling much better and breathing easier.  You look at him and he's the picture of a healthy 65 year old man so it's hard to imagine someone with a heart of gold having heart problems.  I know he's looking forward to coming home today.

The last week has been chock full of spending once my phone almost died from accidental drowning and things with my Dad.  I went grocery shopping yesterday to get fruit and staples so that I can try to eat a little better this week. The Chicago Half Marathon is this coming Sunday and while I am nervous, I will show up and do my very best.  I am a little sleepy from being in the ER at the hospital until 4am on Sunday morning. Still trying to get back on schedule. That's all folks.

Day 12 Finance & Fitness Journey...

Today was a crazy day. I got up and there was a thunderstorm so I couldn't run outside. Instead I did an hour walk/sprint workout on the treadmill and another hour of Shaun T. My Dad was admitted into the hospital last night after some shortness of breath. Can't take any chances with him after quintuple bypass almost 2 years ago. I bought lunch but ended up picking up pizza for the family.

Day 11 Finance & Fitness Journey...

Expensive eating out day.  Once again I ate out every meal. I did manage to get up that morning to get in a 40 minute Shaun T workout.

Day 10 Finance & Fitness Journey...

I finally got my Proactiv Cleanser. I didn't bring my lunch or dinner and ate out every meal. I know...not good. No exercise either.

iPhone is Alive...

My iPhone is alive! Thank God! Soon as I fished it out of the water, I ran to the store to buy rice and covered it immediately. I transferred it to a plastic bag as soon as I got home from work.

All in all, I kept my phone in rice a little over 48 hours and dodged a financial bullet. Whew!
